Adopting Aesthetics: The Design & Psychology Behind Viral Micro-Trends
research-based white paper — december 13, 2025
this paper examines the relationship between design psychology and the rise of viral micro-trends, with a focus on how aesthetics circulate and influence behavior in online shopping and social media environments.
The research draws on Gestalt principles to explore how users perceive and organize visual information, and how these principles are applied, intentionally or unintentionally, within digital platforms to shape attention, preference, and engagement. it also considers how micro-trends emerge, spread, and are adopted through repeated exposure and algorithmic amplification.
through both written analysis and structured visual communication, the paper connects theories of perception with real-world user behavior, highlighting how design plays an active role in guiding decision-making in online spaces.
this work reflects my interest in the intersection of psychology, digital media, and visual design, and how aesthetic systems influence the way trends form and evolve online.
